There are not a lot of survival horror games to choose from on the Wii (or hardcore games for that matter) at this point in time, but developer and publisher Deep Silver wants to change all that with the Himalayas-based horror game Cursed Mountain.
"Set in the late 1980s, gamers will take on the role of a fearless mountaineer as he climbs into the Himalayas on a quest to find his lost brother. As he ascends the mountain, he encounters an ancient curse: the souls of the people who died in that region are stuck in limbo, caught in the Shadow World. Villagers, pilgrims, mountaineers and Buddhist monks – dead but not yet reincarnated – are all that is left on the mountain. Terrible visions will disorient him, and ghosts and demons block his path. But the question remains – is his brother still alive?"
The game was built from the ground up for the Nintendo Wii and boasts that "the entire game world is visible from every level." Will this be the game that snaps the Wii out of its' hardcore slump?

Last Saturday I came across an article on the New York Times' website about the cost of gaming's new found popularity. A few days later, today, I read a reply to the article on GamerscoreBlog and it really started me thinking on the future of our industry as it grows to new heights.
The article basically covers the transition of gaming from a hardcore, almost underground media to mainstream casually oriented markets and the effect is is having on the hardcore gamers. Here is one of the quotes that caught my eye:
"Call it nerd rage. Like loyalists of a once-partisan politician who tacks toward the center later in an election cycle, old-school gamers are coming to terms with the ramifications of their favorite’s newfound popularity. Though they have long craved mainstream respectability for video games, players sometimes resent the concessions their champion must make to attract mainstream adherents."We have all seen its ramifications. Soccer moms playing Wii Sports' Bowling. High school girls toting Nintendo DS' playing with their virtual dogs. What does this all mean for the true gamers? Gamers that fuel the industry by spending hundreds of dollars per month and thousands per year on hardcore games like Halo and Metal Gear and products like a Halo themed Mountain Dew? It is true, the industry is changing but gaming companies need not forget what, or who, got them to where they are.
"I like Tetris, Peggle, and Puzzle Quest as much as the next guy - but without Civilization Revolution, Gears of War, Burnout, and other "hardcore" games, I would lose interest in the hobby pretty quickly, and if you lose your passionate gamers, if you lose your core - the tangential fans who only buy one game per year, won't be enough to sustain the industry, and it will die."Without the hardcore, there is no future. So to Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, and game developers everywhere I must say; do not lose sight of what you used to be. Expand your market yes, but do it in such a way that does not affect the crowd that made you what you are. Fill the needs of your core first, then worry about gaining that new demographic. As a hardcore gamer I can say that it is not a bad thing to get more people to play games. It brings a lot more revenue into the industry and relaxes stereotypes that have been held against gamers for years. It becomes a bad thing when companies see a bag of money in front of their faces and totally forget about their true fans. Fans that will spend a lot of money on a continuous basis to buy their products. So to the company heads out there, keep the casual going, but give back to the hardcore. They are what made you.

With the announcement of Activision seemingly canning a few of their big upcoming games being developed by smaller studios (including Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters game) rumblings have begun that Acti-Blizz is out to close some of their more under-performing studios. A story over at gamesindustry.biz sites analyst Signal Hillas suggesting that "Activision Blizzard will likely close under performing development studios in order to save money."
So which studios could be on the chopping block? Well Sierra looks to be the number one candidate. The article also goes on to say "The publisher has said that Swordfish Studios and Massive Entertainment may be sold, while Radical Entertainment and High Moon Studios will be "realigned" as the company restructures in the wake of its USD 18.9 billion merger."
The company is expected to keep high selling IPs such as Spyro and Crash bandicoot, as well as the upcoming game Prototype. More on this developing story as it becomes available. Stay tuned to GPU!

Pictures’ film for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in 2009.
The game captures the action and intrigue of the Watchmen feature film, directed by Zack Snyder, who previously helmed the blockbuster 300. The film is produced by Lawrence Gordon (Die Hard), Lloyd Levin (United 93) and Deborah Snyder (300), with Herbert W. Gains (The Brave One) and Thomas Tull (The Dark Knight) serving as executive producers. Watchmen is a presentation of Warner Bros. A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, Watchmen will take us to the brink of destruction. Playing the film’s core group of “masks,” the masked adventurers at the center of the story, are Malin Akerman (The Heartbreak Kid), Billy Crudup (The Good Shepherd), Matthew Goode (Match Point), Carla Gugino (Night at the Museum), Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), Stephen McHattie (Shoot ‘em Up), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (TV’s Grey’s Anatomy), and Patrick Wilson (Little Children).

The videogame based on WATCHMEN will go beyond the film and delve into the characters, rivalries and challenges in a mature action-brawler. The game provides gamers with visceral superhero combat as urban vigilantes Rorschach and Nite Owl.

UPDATE: Joystiq got in contact with Bioware and cleared up these rumors:
"Speaking to Joystiq, a BioWare representative deemed the information "incorrect," noting that Muzyka has "never confirmed any plans of Mass Effect exclusivity for the trilogy." So ... there is a trilogy, right?"
So it looks as if this rumor has been debunked...for now.
N4G picked up on a story in the latest issue of Australian 360 with a quote from Bioware CEO Ray Muzyka who states that Bioware has an obligation "to bring the Mass Effect trilogy exclusively to the Xbox 360."
Muzyka goes on to say that "we said we were committed to supporting Mass Effect as a franchise and have the trilogy on the Xbox 360, and that's still our goal," and follows with "we're always very ambitious in our goals and the most important thing is quality, so we're never going to compromise that."
So it appears to be set for now that the Mass Effect trilogy with Commander Shepard will remain exclusive to the 360, but from the sound of the interview another title in the Mass Effect universe could one day make its way to other consoles.

What could be a better use for the Wii's controls other than killing zombies in a mall? Capcom has now announced Dead Rising: Chop 'Till You Drop for the Nintendo Wii. Here is the official word:
"Taking advantage of the same proven technology that brought Resident Evil® 4 so successfully to Wii, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop delivers a more immersive, intuitive and interactive experience as players use the Wii Remote to shoot, slash and bludgeon their way through a zombie infested shopping mall, fighting for survival.
Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance journalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to the small suburban town of Willamette only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. Frank escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping centre and its varied stores offering an endless supply of real and makeshift weapons to fight off the flesh-hungry mob. If Frank is running low on health he can pay a visit to one of the many restaurants or cafes for a meal in order to restore his energy and continue the fight."
The power of the Wii seems to be a bit of a hindrance with most screenshots showing considerably less zombies on screen than with the 360 version and it is yet to be seen how the controls handle, but it should offer a bit more flexibility. The game is running on the same engine as Resident Evil 4 and will feature a similar case-based story as the 360 version. Check out some of the first screens below.

UPDATE: Portfoli.com and Riccitiello have confirmed that it is indeed KOTOR and it is an MMO.
The folks over at Portfolio.com dug up a bit of interesting information in an interview with John Riccitiello, chief executive at EA, this week during E3. Riccitiello stated that:
"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development...And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."
Well anyone with half a video game brain can put two and two together. LucasArts, the studio behind anything Star Wars, and BioWare , the studio behind the Knights of the Old Republic series coming together to create an MMO. What could it be?
Fans of the KOTOR series have been yearning for a new game since the second ended and an MMO would bring the game back in style. Bioware has had great success since KOTOR with last years' Mass Effect, and is hitting their full stride this gen. Hopefully an announcement or trailer of some sort is not too far off!

What started with Xbox 360 achievements and continued on to Steam achievements and Playstation trophies, has carried on to another medium, World of Warcraft. WoW will be getting achievements in the upcoming expansion Wrath of the Lich King. Here is the official word:
"World of Warcraft’s achievements system will launch with more than 500 individual achievements covering every aspect of gameplay, including world exploration, PvE, PvP, professions, and character development; from the purely whimsical to the truly epic, there will be something for everyone. Some achievements come with in-game rewards such as tabards, vanity pets, and titles. All of these rewards are purely cosmetic and just for fun, but you’ll certainly stand out when you proudly display them."
Sounds interesting, I like the idea that Blizzard (or ActiBlizz) is making achievements more than points and taking it to an asthetic level. Maybe Microsoft can learn to use something like this for their upcoming Avatar system.

If you are like me, you love to play games cooperatively with your friends. Call of Duty gameplay has always been chaotic and adding your friends to the mix doesn't change that. In fact, it looks to add to the chaos. See for yourself!

Well, we are thoroughly perplexed. A few days ago the Bungie opening paged teased us with a countdown timer and mix of random sayings that appeared to be shaping up to be a big announcement. Today if you check the site, a letter is up from Harold Ryan (Studio Manager and CEO) saying that:
"We were looking forward to sharing that (reveal of something exciting) with our fan community during the week of E3. However, these plans were just changed by our publishers."
Is this true or just another type of viral marketing? For now it seems as if something came up at the last minute (maybe a surprise announcement of Final Fantasy XIII on 360 took up their time slot?) and we will have to wait a bit longer to discover the nature of Bungie's next project.

Lost Planet Movie
David Hayter is on the stage along with Capcom. Capcom talks about the Lost Planet movie. Possible release in 2011.
...time passes and they are still talking about the movie. We know Capcom is excited but this is getting dull.
And, that was it. Hopefully that was not the most exciting thing Capcom has to offer at E3.
UPDATE: Because Capcom's Press Conference was not all that exciting, I'm going to include some trailers they released for some of their upcoming games.
First up, Street Fighter 4, a game that has fans divided on the art direction. Personally, I think it looks cool. Here is the latest trailer. (Note: GameTrailers says the trailer is partially incomplete and they will be getting the full trailer from Capcom soon.)
