Infinity Ward Possibly Going Sci-Fi (Rumor)

We're going to say this is a rumor for now, but reports are saying the latest issue of OXM UK is confirming Infinity Ward's next game will be a sci-fi shooter. Whether this is their next Call of Duty installment is yet to be determined. For all we know, this could be a whole new series since Infinity Ward has been saying for some time they want to do something different.

As popular as the Call of Duty name is and what it is known for, I can't really see them taking the series into the future yet. My guess is, it will be a new IP but then again, I'm just speculating.

Call of Duty 5 Back to WW2

UPDATE: The scans at MaximumFear have been taken down for legal reasons.

GamesTM magazine and the latest Official Xbox Magazine (with strategyinformer.com and Videogame247.com reporting) have the first details of the next game in the Call of Duty franchise being developed by Treyarch. Call of Duty 5 will head back to the 1940's and World War 2, but this time will be set somewhere in the Pacific region. The game will support co-op and is also being developed for the Nintendo Wii with Wii Zapper support.

“There will be co-op for the first time in a Call of Duty. Also there will be vehicles and squad-based elements to the multiplayer. Formats: PC, PS3, 360 and Wii. The Wii version is being worked on by a separate team within Treyarch. (The mag) reckons it’ll be a much closer comparison between the next-gen and Wii versions than any other Wii game on the market."

The game is also to have a darker overall tone, which suits World War 2 overall.

“Also, this is how gritty it is: ‘The opening scene of the first level we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat - the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. He turns towards you to deal out the same treatment but help arrives just in time. Cue a daring level-long escape.’”

MaximumFear has scans of the latest OXM for your viewing pleasure. It is yet to be seen if Treyarch can make WW2 interesting again with so many games having already treaded the first and second world wars (including the CoD franchise).

Call of Duty MMO in the works?

Yes, you read the title right. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick (soon to be Activision Blizzard CEO) spoke with investment analysts today and mentioned the possibility of a Call of Duty-based MMO.

Here is what IGN had to say:

"Speaking to a group of investment analysts today, Activision CEO (and soon to be Activision Blizzard president and CEO) Bobby Kotick said the company is considering turning its Call of Duty franchise into a massively multiplayer online game.

Kotick said Activision looked at five years of data on U.S. publishers' attempts to break into the MMO market. Most resulted in failure, cancellation or low profit margins. By teaming up with Blizzard, which has proven its online mettle with World of Warcraft, he said Activision can not only pull in WoW's subscriber base to strengthen its balance sheet but also to learn from the company's veterans how to undertake new projects.

That could include tapping Blizzard talent to figure out how Activision might take Call of Duty in an MMO direction, Kotick said."

With how popular the Call of Duty franchise has been, especially Call of Duty 4, it isn't hard to imagine this would be a possibility. With Blizzard's talents in making the best mmorpgs in the world, this could be not far off. The only question is how would they make it work? Is there enough content in the Call of Duty universe to warrant an MMO? I could see a Halo MMO or a GTA-style MMO but Call of Duty? If it is designed by Blizzard it just may work.
